Description

This wide field of the famous Leo Triplet offers the opportunity to spend some time exploring the countless remote background galaxies. After a while of diving in the deep space, one gets a hint of the filamentary universe structure at this scale.

The Leo Triplet
Also known as the M66 Group, or Arp 317, it is a small group of galaxies about 35 million light-years away in the constellation Leo. It consists of the spiral galaxies M65, M66, and NGC 3628 (Hamburger Galaxy). NGC 3593, close to the right border, is frequently identified as a member of this group as well.
The trio is also often considered as a portion of the larger Leo-I- group (also called M66/M96 group) that comprises the M96 Group as well, located 37 Mly away.
The interaction among the three main galaxies of the triplet is revealed by the evident shape distortions, and specially by the 300 kly long tidal tail of NGC3628.

Abell 1209 and Abell 1201
NGC3593 is approximately on the optical line of the center of the Galaxy Cluster Abell 1209, that is located much further away (1-2 Bly away).
The small background galaxies west of NGC 2666 and NGC2661 are part of the Cluster Abell 1201.
