I'm trying to see if I can get any respectable pictures of Jupiter or Saturn (+ the moon) with my Askar 120 APO refractor (840 mm focal length). I'm thinking of going for this camera: https://www.highpointscientific.com/zwo-asi585mc-usb-3-color-cmos-astronomy-camera-asi585mc with a 2x Barlow: https://www.highpointscientific.com/apertura-2x-1-25-inch-barlow-a-2xb1 This won't get me super tight, but close enough? I'm new to solar system imaging so any tips are appreciated! My lingering question is: Is it better to go mono or color for solar system imaging? |

Solar or lunar I'd say mono is the right choice, with filters. Planets, it depends; Jupiter and Saturn at my imaging scale would required an OSC camera, given their rotational speed. With Mars I can get away with mono IRRGB, Venus would be mono UV, obviously. I doubt that whichever choice you make would make a difference given the small image scale and aperture you're going to use. |
