I would disagree to the point of if you have backlash in RA it can affect the responsiveness of that axis to its corrective guide impulses.

Well I would love you to explain how it can have any effect at all, when the gears are constantly engaged and moving in the same direction, the lash is totally 100% moot…it’s just a complete none issue on the RA axis…
sorry but we will agree to totally disagree

*Hands Up*  I apologize Stewart.  I didn't realize I was challenging that which you've passed out doctorates degrees on...

Rather than guide impulse responsiveness, because I do agree with you on that in fact, what I did see an improvement in was the amount of oscillation in RA after adjustment.  You'll have to forgive me, it's 3:24am here and I just finished a chest/back superset workout in the gym about an hour ago.

As I stated above, we will agree to totally disagree..😉 have a good day…

I shall, and you as well good sir.

*Just thought of a funny skit akin to something Monty Python.  Instead of a drive-by shooting, a drive-by disagreement.

"Driving the lorry down Aperture Alley loaded with both the end of his marriage and the obligatory "clouds for months" (as if the UK hasn't enough clouds already to begin with) slowly behind the man ambling down the footpath.  He can make out enough of the man's flustered proclamations "It's a non-issue!" "Someone needs to adjust your gear meshing, lad"  to ID his target...

The driver downshifts and leans on the accelerator enough to let out a plume of diesel exhaust as the truck moves along side the rambling ambler startling him with both the noise and abrupt appearance in his periphery.

"Oi, Stewart..."

*Solid 15 second stare with no expression.  Not even a blink"

"I disagree!!!"

*Speeds off*

Have no clue what the hell you are on about…but I have better things to do that read this shit….

It's called humor.  Perhaps you've heard of the phenomenon?

And clearly not, you're still responding as crotchety as ever...

"than"

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 is that better…

Yes...   Seriously though, playful banter aside.  How has this year been for AP accross the pond?  I've a buddy who lives in the UK who said that there has been an excessive amount of rain this year.

I can not help myself by keeping my mouth shut. It is in fact hard to postulate a solid argument that there is backlash in RA. But if you look in the manual it describes how to do it. On most 70’s the encoders are on the motors. Miles away from the worm gear. Not on the worm, not on the belt drive, not on the output of the gear box, but on the motor. In short, for a system requiring response times of a second with a an inertial mass near 100 ft.lbssq requiring accuracy of 0.0005 degree it flat-out will not work even with feedforward control. SO, when he said he “increased the backlash” and things got better that is good to know. Chris Strang

I don’t think for one minute he said that he “increased” the backlash, that would be stupid….🤔

In a word, awful, we have had sooooooo much rain, more than I can ever remember for the first 4 months of the year….☹️

The spirit and intent of this Forum is to help fellow astronomers and not to develop animosity. Yes, I apologize, it should have read “increase backlash pressure” and I think the choice of the word “stupid” could be replaced with a less hostile one. Also. my quote “flat-out will not work” was in jest, because obviously it does work well. Chris

On the the topic of RA lash (backlash) and the the worm never stops complete engagement and turning. Although in theory that is correct, but there are nuances. Balance becomes more critical with heaver pay loads, longer focal length, and wind. Some “push” to the East is good but push to West is usually bad. The reason is with push to the West and some lash the worm may keep turning but the worm gear can lift off the worm or have greatly reduce the loading. And with the ridiculous precision required, RA guiding can degrade. This often is experienced after a meridian flip. We start out with excellent guiding, do a flip and things get bad. We blame the the sky or the guide calibration when we probably have push (balance) to the West. Chris

*** Exactly.  I appreciate that these mounts let you know real quick when balance is off with the clutches loose.
